CHAPTER SIXTEEN

GIANNI

“Wear the royal blue. From the night you two met.”

“No. Black bleeds class and sophistication.”

“Pink is manly.”

“Shut up, you guys! I can’t think!”

Ivan, Leo, Ari, and I huddle in front of the foyer mirror. They’re taking turns rummaging through my bow tie collection, attempting to quell the elephants romping through my stomach. When Dante learned of my dilemma with Lily, a plan unfolded, and the clan gathered to plot a resolution. My life’s no longer determined by my father’s past or present authority. His hurtful decisions won’t control my future.

Viola brings Alessi into the hall and I scoop her into my arms, gazing into the reflection of happiness. This is family.

“Thanks, Viola. We wouldn’t be the strong, confident men we are today without your motherly guidance.”

“Stop Gianni, or I’m gonna cry.”

“Group hug,” Ari grins, and we bond together.

A new chapter in the Leuzzi brother’s saga is ready to begin. With substantial risk comes a lifetime reward. I’m certain this is destiny.

An incoming text from Dante confirms we’re on schedule. My lips kiss Alessi’s cheek and I pile into the limo with my stupid brothers. Leo spilled the fact Lily has a twin to Ari and Dante, and they’ve been incorrigible. I appreciate their confidence that I’m man enough to satisfy two sisters, but only one holds my heart. The combination of excitement and nerves pumps through my blood so hard I may implode.

The vehicle slows and we step onto the cobblestone streets near the Centro district, weaving through historic buildings towards the Trevi Fountain. A small section in front of the world-famous Roman sculpture is roped off for my grand gesture. Ivan pulls me to the side for a list minute pep talk.

“I’m proud of you. There’s hope for the rest of us.”

“This is impulsive, but my gut’s sure Lily’s the one. She hasn’t mentioned the age gap, but we’ve only known each other for two days. What if she thinks I’m too old or only after sex, or…”

“Stop. If dad taught us one valuable life lesson, it’s this; to the victor go the spoils. I never understood what that meant growing up. Winning the intangible assets of respect, dignity, and love far outweighs money and fame. You own the world when a woman owns your heart.”

“Well said, Shakespeare.”

An incoming text from Tony indicates they’re close, Ivan and I stepping into position. A crowd of hundreds has gathered to witness the romantic spectacle, a wall of five greek gods in tuxedos in the middle of Rome attracting attention. The spotlights position, my hand patting my jacket pocket.

“Deep breath,” Dante says, my fingers shaking loose.

“Sweet fucking…”

“Show some respect, Dante, that’s his wife-to be.”

“I agree with Ari. Besides, I already claimed Hanna.”

“Bullshit, Leo. Once we meet, she’s mine.”

“I’m next in line, losers. Fuck off.”

“Guys!”

Five sets of eyes zero on two identical visions of Aphrodite, floating through the parting crowd on Tony’s arm. Lily’s eyes travel wide, glowing brightly as she intakes the historical surroundings. They stop a few feet away, our presence hidden by a cued group of tourists.
